It’s still in early access and it’s not the most polished game in the world, but its rough edges make for funny moments with friends. There are two of them.While the recent Street Fighter 6 seems to have been thoughtfully designed to be the most broadly appealing fighting game ever, Tekken 8 has set its sights on being the most Tekken fighting game ever. It may be a decade before we see another year like 2023, but that’s OK by us. Without a classic entry in a beloved franchise released every month, there’s room for the new, the weird, and the unexpected.
Where to play: PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Series XStill Wakes the Deep takes place on an oil rig staffed by blue-collar Scottish workers in the 1980s. Corporate greed strikes again, and the rig drills too deeply, unleashing… something. Still Wakes the Deep is a masterclass in narrative horror, with a sympathetic cast of survivors and a hideous, Lovecraftian antagonist. The game remains on rails, and the AI can be dodgy, but I was so terrified that I was afraid to push on any of the guardrails the game put up. This is a game that succeeds based off vibes — an incredibly detailed and well-realized environment, great voice acting and direction, and the fleshy and nefarious shapes of the monsters chasing protagonist Caz McLeary through the rig. This is a short experience, coming in at about four hours, but Still Wakes the Deep is utterly unforgettable. —CM

Admittedly, I’ve never really been drawn to horror games, just as I’ve never been an avid fan of horror films, but everyone I ask tells me that Amnesia: The Dark Descent certainly gets hearts racing. From personal experience, it would be Alan Wake 2, but even then I wouldn’t say it was absolutely terrifying (although, it was a very, very good game!)

Of course, the fantasy in this case is that you’re a galactic outlaw, and that’s how the open world design works here – you’re learning about opportunities for scores both big and small, and taking advantage of them when your moment comes along. It filters down into the moment-to-moment action, too, where your attempts at stealth might suddenly break into open combat, and you can make improvisational use of enemy weapons or your buddy Nix to even the odds.
Stealth is essential for the early parts of any encounter, it feels pretty similar to a modern Assassin’s Creed game in parts, you’ve got to work your angles, memorise timing and use your gadgets or Nix to get the advantage.
The control the player is implied to have during the dogfight section of the trailer suggests that might have full control of Kay’s ship when it comes to space battles and plotting courses through the stars. This sense is especially encouraged by the trailer’s conclusion, which has an inquisitive ND-5 asking: “Where do we go next?” Kay replies: “Anywhere we want.”
